'We dare to care'

Volunteer drivers needed

MUNCY--It is often during crises when opportunities present themselves. A group of area women recently developed a service in which to meet the needs of ill individuals whose cupboards are bare.

"That's why 'We Dare to Care,' formed," said Anne Knox, of Muncy. The service provides a delivered care bag containing soda, tissues, acetaminophen, tea bags, chicken noodle soup, crackers, and other snacks.

"During sudden illness, if someone realizes they have no supplies, they can contact either myself or the church office and ask for a care bag to be delivered. It's just enough to tide them over until they can get to the store," Knox said.

All that's missing from the service are delivery drivers, and Knox said more information can be gleaned by contacting either her or the church office of First United Methodist Church, 602 South Market Street.

Ministry is nothing new to Knox, who founded Widow's Mite, a group organized in 2006. The small group began as eight, meeting for lunch at her home and expanded to nearly 40 women.

"We outgrew my dining room so we began having lunch every third Thursday at different restaurants," she said. Represented by widows from all denominations and neighboring towns as far away as Danville,

all widows are welcome. Originally meant to be a social support group, they've recently chosen to become an active presence in their communities.

Caring is part of Knox's DNA, as she is a retired nurse. Knox is glad to see communities and families reconnecting during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Americans have always stepped up to the plate in times of war and disasters, which seems to fit both venues," she said.

Knox can be reached at 570.974.1020 or the church office 570-546-8030.
