LAPORTE-A former Sullivan County sheriff's deputy allegedly took $198,566 while she was employed, according to federal court documents. Mary Handzus, 63, of Laporte, was charged with theft in the scheme which took place between 2012 and last year, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the state police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenny P. Roberts is prosecuting the case. Handzus, if convicted, could face a 10-year prison term, according to U.S. Attorney David J. Freed.

CHARGED AND SENTENCED

Those charged and the law enforcement agencies involved

were:

Motorist Stuart Caruso, 59, of 322 Rocky Hill Road, Muncy; Old Lycoming Township police; DUI of fentanyl and methamphetamines in the 2000 block of Lycoming Creek Road on Oct. 19; this is his second DUI arrest; released on $1,500 bail.

Jasmine Thomas, 19, of 38 W. Houston Ave., Montgomery; city police; statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor and indecent assault for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a male minor in the city's East End in late September; jailed in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Sentenced to state prison:

Melissa L. Stoner, 37, of 179 Old Cement Road, Lot B50, six to 23 months for simple assault.

Sentenced to county prison:

Brandon R. Myers, 34, of 411 S. Washington St., Muncy, 20 to 40 days, 18 months probation, DUI education, a drug and alcohol assessment and 50 hours of community service for driving on a suspended license and DUI.
