Muncy Locals 1.1.2020

January 1, 2020
by Cindy Knier , The Luminary

With the New Year freshly in place, we at The Luminary wish you a properous, adventurous 2020, as we begin our 179th year of publication. One-hundred years ago, the world entered the "Roaring '20s," a greatly-fascinating time period for me as my parents were birthed in that decade. Women finally earned the right to vote, thanks to the passage of the 19th amendment. Machinery and technology improved women's domestic lives with the electric washing machine and vacuum cleaner helping to tidy households. The first commercial radio station hit the airwaves from Pittsburgh's KDKA and visiting movie theaters were a mainstay among households. Automobiles, a luxury at the beginning of the decade, were practically necessities by 1930 and gave people the freedom to roam. Some freedoms, however, were curtailed, such as the 18th amendment which was activated at midnight on Jan. 16, 2020. The Volstead Act closed taverns, bars and saloons from selling intoxication beverages, which then created an underground market for booze. I could pratter on, but my intention is to reflect how much change 100 years has brought us. As always, we would enjoy hearing our readers' perspectives!

If this page appears to look askew, it's because no Hughesville Locals column is available for our readers. If you enjoy learning and writing about the greater Hughesville area and can meet a Sunday afternoon deadline, consider becoming a correspondent for the Hughesville area. While it's not necessary to live in Hughesville, and computer literacy isn't required for the paid position, our readers need a representative to contribute a weekly column for the Hughesville tri-town locals section on this page. The position is available January 2020. Contact via email at cknier@muncyluminary.com or call 570.584.2134 for additional information and guidelines.
