Looking backward

July 11, 1871

There was a general suspension of business in Muncy on the Fourth and the day was a very quiet one. A number of young people picnicked above Clarkstown and had a pleasant time, until the storm came up.

Not much local news in this issue.

July 11, 1879

H.C. Levan's trotting horse, "Irish Billie," won a race at Williamsport on the Fourth.

James D. Brewer caught a large bass in the river on Tuesday. It weighed over three pounds.

Died: Ebenezer Walton, at his home in Muncy Creek township, aged 79 years.

July 10, 1919

Price Two Cents

On Friday last while assisting his brother, Calvin Smith, at Port Penn, in putting a new roof on his residence, David Smith slipped and fell to the ground, a distance of about 35 feet breaking four ribs, injuring his collar bone, cutting his head very badly and receiving internal injuries.

Dr. and Mrs. T. K. Wood and daughter, Eleanor, and Muller and Kenneth Heberton motored to Eagles Mere on Sunday where they spent the day.

Jon Parks VanBuskirk died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. S. Weaver, at Montgomery, Wednesday night at 10:45 o'clock, aged 92 years, 9 months and 22 days.

Herbart W. Cummings, President Judge of the Northumberland County Courts, was rescued from drowning by Edward V. Nicely, of Sunbury, a former Register of Wills and Recorder of Deeds. The two men were fishing in Penn's Creek, near Selinsgrove when Judge Cummings hooked a bass. In playing it he slipped off a stone, and was soon floundering in twenty feet of water.

Two Awarded Infantry Combat Badge-Word comes from the Fifth Army in Italy that Pvt. William Harrison Michael, of Muncy, has received the Combat Infantry Badge; and from Normandy comes word that Sgt. Maurice G. Karschner, was made Expert C Combat Infantryman and was awarded this same medal.

Pvt. George Updegraf, of Muncy, arrived here on Tuesday from overseas where he received a flesh wound in his shoulder and suffered nervous fatigue while fighting on the Anzio Beachead in Italy.

Miss Erma McManigal of North Market is among the 95 newly inducted WAVE apprentice seamen who left Philadelphia yesterday to report to theU,S. Naval Training Station in the bronx, N.Y..

Funeral services were held Sunday for MRs. Ella A. Shaw, who died Thursday, Aug. 3.

Aaron E. Lilley, aged 82 years, died Aug. 6. Formerly of Muncy, a member of the F.A.M. 499 and also the I.O.O. F.

Birth: A baby girl was born to Pvt. and Mrs. Howard Brittain last week Pvt. Brittain is with the Marines, stationed at Parris Island, S.C.

Mrs. Catherine Waldron of Muncy will be awarded her degree in elementary and kindergarten education.

The Luminary Publisher Editor, Bob Wilt, was honored last week when he was one of two ew memvers named to the Board of directors of the International Conference of Weekly Newspaper Editors.

John Coppes, Jr., completing his requirements for scouting's highest award, Eagle, was one of four boys from Troop 24, Muncy, who completed work for advancement when 14 boys from the troop spend a week at Camp Kline.
