Montgomery Locals July 10, 2019

By Staff | Jul 11, 2019

It’s hard to believe another Fourth of July has come and gone! As my Gram, Dorothy Harman, the original writer of this column used to say, “Once the Fourth of July has come, the summer is shot.” I think it’s sad but true!

Certainly one of the best parts of July is the beautiful display of fireworks on July 3, and the town owes a huge amount of gratitude to the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Company for putting on another great show this year, as they have done for so many years!

In this town, we count on The Montgomery Volunteer Fire Company a lot. They provide some much-loved town traditions like the fireworks, the carnival, and the Fall Festival. But our reliance on them is so much deeper than the fun events, we depend on them to stand guard over us and rescue us and our loved ones in the event that disaster would happen to strike. These are the men and women who will put down a half-eaten piece of cake in the middle of their own child’s birthday party to pull anyone of us out a burning house or a crumpled car. We owe them our support.

The Montgomery Volunteer Fire Company is asking for donations of cases of water bottles to help them get through the blistering summer months. Fighting fires under tremendous amounts of gear takes a physical toll on them, and it’s far worse in the intense heat and humidity of summer. Helping them stay hydrated is the least we can do. They would be grateful if Montgomery residents would be willing to buy one or a few cases of bottled water and either drop it off at the station, or call the station at 547-1380 and they can arrange for it to be picked up.

THOT “Firefighters are some of the most selfless public servants you will ever encounter.” Dennis Leary

Lots of Happy Birthday wishes go to Brantley Rider, who will be celebrating his fourth birthday on July 10.

Happy birthday to Donna Yocum, who will be marking her special day on July 12. May you have many happy returns of the day, Donna!

Congratulations to Brayden Strouse for being the Montgomery Area High School recipient of the 2019 Student Athlete Perseverance Award. The honor was presented by UPMC Susquehanna and Brayden was recognized for persevering over an injury to return to the playing field. He participates in both football and baseball.

Montgomery Volunteer Fire Company Chief Brad Harding would like to ask local residents to please check up on elderly neighbors in the heat and humidity to make sure they are okay.

If you are willing to volunteer with one of our local fire companies as an emergency responder or as a behind-the-scenes supporter please contact the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Company at 547-1380 or the Clinton Township Fire Company at 547-1000.

If you’re on Facebook, be sure to follow the Montgomery Emergency Management Agency’s page. They provide up-to-the minute weather warnings that are specific to Montgomery.

Hometown Hero Banner orders are being accepted through the end of summer. Forms can be picked up at the Borough Office or Montgomery Weis.
