MUNCY - National Senior Health and Fitness Day was celebrated here in Muncy on Wednesday, May 27 at the Lycoming Mall. Several seniors over age 65 were able to take advantage of many screenings and health plans.

All attendees were eligible for a free drawing and many of the resource vendors were handing out complimentary gifts just for coming.

A new free health program with UPMC, UPMC AGE WELL, was launched last March for seniors. Program coordinator, Nancie English said over 1400 members are registered so far. She was taking enrollments during the event and provided a quarterly newsletter with tips on health and wellness and "how to age healthy and happy" specifically targeted to those 55 and above. Forty new members joined that day. To join go to UPMCSusquehanna.org/AgeWell.

Activities were available from 10 a.m. until1 p.m. and included seated stretching, Silver Sneakers, and close-up strolling magic by Brent Kessler. Over 30 community organizations were represented as well as live music and light refreshments.

"We share how to be socially active and to live the best life through these years," said English. Monthly wellness and fitness opportunities are provided for members and social activities to share. An Age Well summer picnic is being planned at Montoursville Indian Park for August 23 from 12-2 p.m. For working seniors, there are day and evening programs and anyone who wants to be involved according to English. "It is very personal and one-on-one," she added.

On Thursday, June 27 a program "Dine With the Docs: Joint Replacements" will be offered from 6-8 p.m. at the UPMC Regional Medical Center on High St. in Williamsport.

On August 21 and September 18 there will be a two part session on injury prevention at the Life Center at the Williamsport YMCA. This educational program is held on the third Wednesday of each month to learn about home safety, senior driving and pedestrian safety. Assessments through the UPMC Susquehanna Outpatient Physical Therapy will be offered. To register call 570-660-6315. The next two part session will be Oct. 16 and Nov. 20.
