Hughesville Locals June 26, 2019

June 26, 2019
By NANCY HODGE , The Luminary

t appears that the sun wanted to reach the summer solstice before showing itself to us in cloudless skies! This past weekend, the first of astronomical summer, was truly a spectacular sample of perfect Pennsylvania summer. I hope everyone was able to get outdoors for at least part of the time and soak it in. I hope that we can see many more days like those. The Fourth of July is next week, so there will be many local opportunities for concerts, fairs, and festivals in the days following.

Does anyone really see an end in sight for the intersection project on North Main Street? There has been a lot of heavy equipment use and traffic control flaggers have been kept busy, but the outward appearance, as is typical in this type of process, doesn't seem to change, but instead seems less organized. We will, I'm sure, find that the whole thing is a big improvement once it is complete. I hope that homeowners in that area will benefit from the changes, and that traffic will move more smoothly and safely on both routes, US 220 and PA 405. The rainy weather has caused delays, but we can hope that a period of dry days will help get things moving.

As we come to the end of June and near the Independence Day holiday, I expect to hear and see more fireworks being set off in the area. I hope that those who purchase these loud, incendiary devices will remember that not all of us like to be jolted out of our chairs, or beds, by the sudden unexpected explosion from unknown sources. I have been concerned about the recent change in state law that allows private purchase of some of the larger fireworks, and hope that everyone will stay safe and stay in their neighbors' good graces.

Hughesville Area Public Library has many Summer Reading activities and programs coming up in July and August. If you haven't registered for programs or received your reading log, there is plenty of time for both. Make it a habit to visit the library frequently and see all the great opportunities for fun and learning that are here in our neighborhood.
