Hughesville Locals June 5, 2019

By Staff | Jun 5, 2019

What a lovely week for the annual Firemen’s Carnival! After the exceptionally wet month of May, it’s nice to see several dry days in a row! I hope the weather will settle into summer days that allow us to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family. I really need to get my pool set up and filled so it will be ready when the hot weather arrives.

This Saturday, as part of your evening stargazing, note that the moon, in the west, will be very close to the star Regulus, one of the brightest stars in our night sky and a prominent feature of the constellation Leo. Just as the two outer bowl stars of the Big Dipper line up to point toward the North Star (Polaris), the two inner bowl stars can give us a guide to Regulus, in the opposite direction, that is, toward the horizon.

Here on Earth, we are experiencing a warming trend, as shown by the historical climate record and documented in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) April 2019 Global Climate Report. From an article on EarthSky.org, I learned that “despite the cool springtime weather for some of us in the U.S., globally April 2019 was the second-hottest April in the climate record, dating back to 1880.” While it is difficult for any one person to make much of a difference in something global, each of us can, and should, practice conservation and good stewardship of all of our resources. I urge everyone to think about ways their household can reduce their carbon footprint. Something simple like using a clothesline, or a bicycle, whenever the weather permits can help to reduce energy use. And please remember that “global warming” doesn’t just mean that temperatures will be higher; if the planet’s average temperature goes up, air and ocean currents can change to impact weather patterns, causing more intense storms, or different cycles of wet and dry seasons.

Now that the school year has ended, please be watchful for children on bicycles and scooters, as well as pedestrians. When you are looking for a place to spend some leisure time, Bodine Park, right here in town, and Lime Bluff Recreation Area on Elm Drive are great spots to enjoy the outdoors without having to travel.

Have a great week!
