PICTURE ROCKS - A perfect day of weather and shouts of glee brought students outside for an important national recognition on Friday afternoon, May 31st.

Students from grades K through 6th at Ferrell Elementary School in Picture Rocks were given an honorable citation from Rep. Garth Everett (R-Muncy) for receiving a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award by the U.S. Department of Education.

Joining Everett were East Lycoming School Superintendent, Michael Pawlik and School Principal, Jill Warg. "This is a pretty big honor," Pawlik told the students. "How proud you must be to achieve a Blue Ribbon School." Only three schools received the award in Pennsylvania according to Pawlik. This award was created in 1982 to honor schools that achieve high levels of student achievement or make significant improvements in closing the achievement gaps. One third of all schools nominated must serve student populations of at least 40 percent from disadvantaged backgrounds.

On Friday, Rep. Garth Everett, School principal Jill Warg, and East Lycoming Superintendent, Michael Pawlik presented a praiseworthy citation to the students at Ferrell Elementary School for receiving a National Blue Ribbon award.

Ferrell was among over 2,255 public and private schools to have competed for this award, narrowed down to 255 and then the top three. "You did a wonderful job," added Pawlik. The other two schools to receive the award were in Scranton and Erie noted Pawlik. "It is wonderful to walk into Ferrell School and see the respect from everyone."

Parents, grandparents, family and friends gathered outside the school at 1 p.m. as the award was presented to them in front of the school near Van Rennseleaer Park.

"You've worked hard every day," Warg told them, "and helped each other out."

As Warg congratulated them, she led them into a chant, cheering them on and gaining a round of applause from everyone there.

Rep. Everett announced how fortunate for the students to attend school here as they have received this award previously in 2008, and again in 2018.

Following the presentation the students saw a slide show, and had a picnic earlier in the week when they each received a blue tee shirt.
