Hughesville Locals May 22, 2019

May 22, 2019
By NANCY HODGE , The Luminary

Can you believe we are nearing the end of May? It seems to have come along very quickly, but I guess that's because it is always such a busy month. I have enjoyed several evenings of baseball, softball, and soccer games - and "dined" at the associated concession stands many times! There's nothing quite so entertaining as watching 6-year-olds playing and learning to play baseball! Thank goodness for willing volunteers who coach and umpire/referee for Little League and AYSO. Our local facilities, so well-designed and maintained, are a blessing to the whole community, and an indication of the value we place on these organized activities.

It's also time for Memorial Day and the annual honor we give to our deceased military members. For many of us, this has become a time to decorate the graves of all who came before us, and to pause in our regular routines to honor them. Be sure to watch, or participate in the Monday morning parade and ceremony at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, and bring your children or grandchildren along. As we observe the 101st year since the end of WWI, it is important to remember those who have sacrificed for our ideals and our protection. In addition to the well-known poem "In Flanders Fields" by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, I recommend this poem from the website www.familyfriendpoems.com.
