Muncy Locals Apr.3, 2019

April 3, 2019
By BARBARA C. BARRETT , The Luminary

I visited the Olde Barn Centre in Pennsdale for the last time on Thursday. It was very nostalgic for me. I remember when Linda Haines Fry opened it in the early 90s and we got together for a cover shot to promote it for tourism, a very growing industry for Lycoming County. At the time I was serving on the Lycoming County Visitors board. Throughout the years I would stop in and could never leave without making a purchase or two, or three. Linda is retiring and Sunday was the last retail day, but the barn itself will remain part of the historic barn tour with the barn quilts.

Some local restaurants from our area will be will be going head-to-head in a cooking challege fundraiser for the YWCA this Sunday. Haywood's Bar & Grill and Sammy's Restaurant will be part of the "Cuisine for a Cause" at the Benjamin Ballroom on Sunday from noon to 2:30 p.m. in Williamsport. Over 13 chefs will be preparing their finest dishes for all to sample. Call 570-322-4637 to get your ticket today. You will get to vote to see who gets the big cooking prize!

The Spotted Lanternfly has been spotted now in Dauphin County and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has expanded the area to a quarantine zone which means a restricted movement of articles that contain any life stages of the critter, including egg masses, nymps and adults. All contractors, truck drivers, farmers, rail owners and businsses will require a permit to transport. Beginning May 1, 2019 the Department's Bureau of Plant Industry will begin to perform inspections. 13 other counties are quarantined. They are Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, and Schuykill.

A bill in the Senate will limit opioid prescriptions to seven days unless there is a medical emergency that puts the individual's health or safety at risk. The bill also includes exceptions for cases involving acute and chronic pain, cancer treatment or for palliative care or hospice care. A bill was passed to strengthen academic guidelines for CPR training in grades 9 through 12. If it becomes law, PA will be the 39th state to enact similar CPR legislation which is a top priority for the American Heart Association.

The Bloomsburg Fair Association announced their lineup for the season this year and the Muncy Garden Club has explored the flower themes already preparing for their entries for September 21-28. The new theme will be "Winter Wonderland" although we are thinking spring. The daffodils I picked on Sunday in my back yard were so welcoming as they rest on our kitchen table. And it was still March!

Welcome Spring!
