Hughesville Locals Jan. 2, 2019

By Staff | Jan 3, 2019

Happy New Year to all! We are having a rather mild beginning to the year, although the forecasts seem to indicate that January will be much as we would expect. I do hope we get at least enough snow to make things less dreary looking. I don’t mind if the temperatures stay in the 20s or higher. That sub-zero stuff is not one of my favorite things about winter.

Pennsylvania College of Technology recently announced the winners of its annual Food Show. The Food Show provides a venue for students to share their final projects in several courses and to gain feedback from industry professionals who judge their work. At the same time, it offers a learning experience for high school students interested in hospitality-related careers, who make a visit to the show as part of a daylong campus experience.

Some of the classes entering final projects were Advanced Breads, Classical and Specialty Desserts Presentation, and Principles of Chocolate Works courses.

Hughesville residents who won awards were: Garrett E. Mottern, third place in the Garde Manger category and Cyril L. Hunter, who won both the third place award for Classical and Specialty Dessert Presentation, and honorable mention in the Principles of Chocolate Works competitions. Congratulations to both of these culinary artists! ( Just a note to my readers — I looked up “garde manger,” a French term, and found that it means “a food storage place” or “pantry”).

While Penn College is still on semester break, local schools have resumed classes, with the East Lycoming School District semester scheduled to end on January 15. It’s hard to believe that the school year is nearly half done! But this time of year means that student athletes and musicians are hard at work, polishing and demonstrating their skills. Be sure to check the schedules and treat yourself to some games and concerts over the next few months. We have some great facilities and the students at HHS are a delight to watch and hear.

Hughesville Area Public Library will begin a new series of programs for children and adults. Please call or visit the library (570-584-3762) to get the newest schedule of Story Hours, craft events, and other fun and exciting, free programming.

Here’s some interesting info from EarthSky.org, my favorite science website: “A new celestial visitor has been discovered by Japanese astronomer Masayuki Iwamoto. . . It’s a fast-moving comet that will be closest to Earth by February 2019. The celestial visitor will safely pass by Earth at some 28 million miles (45 million km). The comet has been designated C/2018 Y1 (Iwamoto). The comet’s closest approach to Earth should occur around February 11-12, 2019. Preliminary estimates suggest the newly found comet might reach a brightness or magnitude between 7.5 and 8.9, which means it should be easily seen with small telescopes and perhaps even in binoculars in a few weeks.”

Keep an eye on the sky, and maybe our night sky will be clear enough to see this exciting new find!
