150 years ago

1868

The venerable patriot and statesman, Thaddeus Stevens, died at his residence in Washington City, on Tuesday night last, at 12 o'clock.

The Muncy Female Seminary will commence the new school year on Monday, Sept. 7.

The new State Hospital for the Insane which the commissioners have decided to locate at Danville, will be 1143 feet or nearly 3/4 of a mile, in length.

A man was discovered in the upper rooms of the residence of Mr. E.M.Green of this Borough on Monday night of last week before the family had retired to bed. Mr. Green gave the rascal chase, and Might have captured him had he not in the darkness ran against a tree in the yard and injured his face and head. The scoundrel did not succeed in carrying any plunder.

The farm house of Hugh Watson, in Muncy Creek township, about two miles from this Borough was destroyed by fire on Friday night.

The man who hired the buggy at Johnson's Livery Stable, several weeks ago, and overstayed his time, returned with the property last week. He paid Mr. Johnson his bill promptly and hired another horse for a trip in another direction.

A pleasant wedding took place at the residence of Mr. Charles F. Ritter on Main street, Wednesday evening, at which time his daughter, Miss Lizzie, was married to Mr. Henry Maurer.

ON Thursday last G. Guise Dykins, Esq., of Williamsport, was married to Miss Margaret M. Harper of Newberry, at Elmira, N.Y.

Mrs. Sallie C. Painter died at the family residence on Washington Street on Friday morning. Mrs. Painter has been sick about two weeks with typhoid fever.

Mrs. Lydia Sutton died at the home of her daughter on Sunday morning last, aged 90 years.

The engagement of Miss Mary Ellicott to the prominent German Scientist, Egyptologist, Professor Jean Jaques Hess, has just been announced.

The beautiful dwelling of MR. A.B. Worthington and Mr. Charles Downey are nearing completion.

Married in Muncy on Aug. 10, Mr. H.G. Campbell and Miss Rebecca Hill, both of Tivoli, Pa.

Frank Rupert, son of J.E. Rupert and the late Mrs. Rupert of Muncy R.D. 4, has been reported killed by the Japs. American Red Cross Information Indicates Death Occurred Six Months Ago.

Word has been received here that Pvt. Henry Covert of Camp Maxey, Texas received a compound fracture of the jaw while on maneuvers August 6. His wife left to join her husband upon hearing that he was in a critical condition with a blood stream infection. Word ha since been received from MRs. Covert that his condition is much improved.

Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Bryan of Picture Rocks announced the engagement of their daughter Rebecca to Joseph H. Waltman, of Muncy.

Captain and MRs. Ben Renn announced the marriage of their son, Jace Casey Renn, Aviation Machinist Mate 2/c of the Naval Air Force, to Miss Mary Boyliss of Chicago.

Died: Lloyd C. Koons, local plumber, died suddenly of a heart attack Friday.

The new sign leading to Lundy Lumber company on West Water took a terrific beating last Friday when Carol Ann Aunkst, of Watsontown, on her way to work, lost control of her automobile when the ball joints became dislodged.

The rumors of the Weis Makrets locating a new store in Muncy continue to run wild. Direct from Wayne Lyons, director of real estate and planning for Weis at Sunbury, we get word that Weis has not rented, leased, bought or entered into any kind of contract with anyone in Muncy for a market

Mr. and Mrs. J. Frederick Gehr, of Hughesville, announce the marriage of their daughter Joanna Louise, to Michael Jay Andrews, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Andrews of Picture Rocks.

While serving with the U.S. Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Enterprise, Gene L. Bieber recently was promoted to Lieutenant Commander. Commander Bieber is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Bieber, of Muncy.

Carl (Zeb) Stevens, who is serving with the U.S. Army in Thailand, has been promoted to Spec. 4, according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Edmund Luft, of near Muncy.

Bethany Lutheran church Montoursville, was the scene for the marriage of Miss Nancy Bridgland to Jeffrey VanHorn, of Hughesville.

Died: Ann Susan Friant, Muncy, was chef at the Fort Brady Hotel and old Chere Restaurant, died suddenly on Aug. 13; Mary AnnLeBarron, 25, Muncy, died Aug. 12 in the Williamsport hospital; Pauline Slonaker, 73, Hughesville, died Aug. 7; Ethel M. Shaner, Muncy, Aug. 12.
