Muncy Locals Aug. 1, 2018

August 1, 2018
By BARBARA C. BARRETT , The Luminary

This was one of the busiest weeks in my lifetime, not to mention the higher waters from all the rain we had. Fortunately there were no major casualties, but there were lots of cancellations. Last Thursday afternoon a notice was sent out from the Muncy Professional Business Association explaining why the Muncy 4th Friday event had to be cancelled. Both the Muncy Police department and the borough were extremely busy through the flash flooding, power outages, and rising waters and suggested to cancel. A forecast of more rain for Friday and the following week only added to the concern. Some vendors had to cancel as well, because they were affected with lots of clean up.

We are in need of lots of volunteers especially in Muncy's Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Applications are online and more information can be found through Jo Ann Welch who is the Volunteer Services Assistant and Pastoral Care director at Muncy Valley Hospital. She can be reached at 546-4128. You can help customers and patients with directions, work in the gift shop or information desk or with some social activities. She said there are lots of opportunities for lots of interests.

Volunteers are also needed for Meals on Wheels to deliver meals to homebound seniors in the community. Run by STEP at the Meck Senior Center in Muncy Township, volunteers are always needed. There is some mileage reimbursement for drivers. They are also looking for assistants and coordinators to donate time one or more days a week. To apply call the Office of Aging at 323-3096 or visit any Senior Center.

This is the beginning of the harvest season and Penn State Extension office has a workshop "Food For Profit" that will take you step by step through the information necessary to start and run a small food product business. This workshop, they say, is especially directed to those who will be making their own food product and want to develop a business venture proactively. It will show how to make and pack your products for release through grocery stores, open-air markets, or restaurants. More information is provided through their website or stop in the local office on County Farm Road.

Put August 11 on your calendar for the annual Penn State Master Gardeners Garden Fest. He will speak on "Designing a Garden for Form, Function and Fun. There will be plenty of educational displays on hand from 9 to 1.

Yoga in the Park at Lime Bluff Park in Wolf Township will be held during August starting this Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and again on Thursday night August 9th at 6:30 p.m. I am hoping for nice weather as this is a wonderful, stress-free experience.
