HUGHESVILLE - Members of the Greater Hughesville Business Association (GHBA) look forward to two major events that they sponsor throughout the year. The first is the big 5 to Drive event held every year at Christmas time, and the other is the awarding of senior scholarships.

The organization holds fundraising events throughout the year to raise money, especially for the scholarships. Cheryl Richards, President of the organization, said this is an important part of what they do. It is a community effort to raise awareness not only to the business community in the Hughesville area, but to recognize the students who express an interest in serving their community.

Diane Santo who is on the committee selection, said that each year it is a difficult task to pick the top two candidates for the scholarships. "This year we had three recommendations," she said of the 17 entries.

Samantha Thompson was their first choice, followed by Kade Heckel. Each of them received $1,000. Rachel Thomas was the third recipient, thanks to extra funds donated from some of the new business members according to Santo. She was awarded $300.

The seniors were awarded their scholarships during a dinner held Tuesday night, June 5 at the Country Fork Restaurant in Hughesville. Kade will be attending the Naval Academy, Samantha has been accepted in the Air Force Academy and Rachel will be attending Wilkes University.

Over 50 business members represent the GHBA. Two bingo fundraisers are held to raise money for the scholarships and the annual children's Christmas party and parade.
