Hughesville Locals May 31, 2018

June 1, 2018
By NANCY HODGE , The Luminary

I hope everyone had a good holiday weekend. When it was first established, Memorial Day was observed on the 30th of May, but some time ago the powers that be decided we should always hove it on the last Monday of that month. It is more convenient for extended weekend activities and easier to remember, but somehow a specific day seems to give a holiday more impact and importance. Christmas Day, for example, or Fourth of July, get more recognition (and businesses are more likely to give their workers holiday time) than days like Labor Day or Easter.

The school year has come to an end and there have been several elementary awards and graduation programs this week, with Hughesville High School commencement this Friday. Congratulations to all the graduates and their families!

Hughesville Area Public Library has an extensive list of summer programs and activities for everyone from ages 1 to 100! In addition to the usual list of weekly "Wee" programs and Story Times, Each Wednesday will feature an afternoon program for kids ages 5 to 12. Tweens and Teens will enjoy biweekly evening programs beginning June 7, and there are also a few evenings devoted to Adult programs. Stop by the library to get the full list and to sign up for those events which need pre-registration.

It's almost time for the annual Firemen's Carnival! Get your bicycles, wagons, and floats ready and decorated for the Pet Parade nest Monday, your classic cars shined up for the Antique Car parade on Wednesday, and be ready for the sound of many sirens when the Firemen's Parade takes place on Saturday. I am looking forward to my usual food selections, particularly the yummy pies! Our volunteer firemen spend many hours in training and practice so that they are ready to be of service to the community, so let's all show our appreciation and support the HVFD!

Sometimes I don't have any reason to drive on Main Street and recently I was pleasantly surprised to see that resurfacing and newly painted lines were an accomplished fact! Someone had mentioned that traffic was slowed on Main Street in the morning, but I didn't realize it was due to construction. I am glad that the downtown area looks great as we begin the summer season.
