Hughesville Locals May 23, 2018

May 23, 2018
By NANCY HODGE , The Luminary

This recent pattern of wet weather is certainly a good thing for recharging streams, ponds, and lakes, but it doesn't do much for allowing me to enjoy my yard and patio! It's especially hard when we have nice days during the work week, but then a rainy washout on the weekend. I hope the upcoming holiday weekend will have limited amounts of rainfall.

Our local school district is nearing the end of the school year, with students completing their coursework and taking final exams. All of the state-wide standardized tests have been completed, as well as the AP (Advanced Placement) tests that help students earn college credit. The elementary classes at Ashkar Elementary had a fun day last Friday, a reward for their fine efforts in completing the year's requirements, and HHS celebrated May Day with games, lip sync battles, and the traditional crowning of the May Day royalty.

Congratulations to Queen Jayden Leighow, Princess Cierra Getz, Mr. Spartacus Max Derby, and Prince Caleb Heller!

Many groups and service clubs will be participating in the annual parade on Memorial Day, and I hope everyone will either march in the event, or watch the parade along its route from the HVFD Fire Hall to the HHS parking lot. Since Memorial Day is next Monday, we know that the annual firemen's carnival is also coming up. The week of fun, food, and camaraderie begins with the Pet Parade on Monday, June 4, so get your costumes and floats ready! There will be three parades during Carnival week, so be sure to stake out your favorite viewing spot.

Did you know that the GHBA (Greater Hughesville Business Association) has 48 members? While several of the member businesses and organizations are not located on Main Street, all of them are vital, contributing members of the community. GHBA will be presenting two scholarships to graduating seniors at HHS. The association is always happy to have new members join the group. You can get membership information at Cheri's House of Flowers or Doug Spotts Appliance or from any other member.
