Hughesville Locals Mar.21, 2018

March 21, 2018
By NANCY HODGE , The Luminary

Can it really be true? The calendar says it is Spring! Mother Nature,

however, does not always bring us what we expect of weather, so don't

put your snow shovels far out of reach just yet. This month has been a

true study of the unpredictability of March weather. The one thing we

can count on is variety!

While the most common sports for young people in our community are

team sports, some local teens are proving their abilities in national

competition in less common activities. One HHS student, Mick Wertz, is

on track to compete in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. As a member

of the Sullivan County Shooting Team, Mick has competed in trap

shooting events, and most recently earned a Bronze medal in Mixed Trap

at the World Cup Shooting in Guadalajara, Mexico. This new Olympic

category is a co-ed team of one man and one woman. Mick's teammate was

Aeriel Skinner who lives in California. In the Men's Trap event there

were 57 competitors, only 3 of which were from the USA, and Mick

placed 10th, highest of the Americans. Please join me in

congratulating Mick for his outstanding performance, the result of

much determination and practice, and watch for upcoming events that

will help him earn funding for his Olympic run! Congratulations, Mick!

The Methodist churches in Hughesville are undergoing a transformation.

After a vote by both congregations approving a merger, the members of

Bethany and Christ churches are completing the final steps to becoming

The Beacon, a United Methodist Church. The congregation is currently

worshipping at the 111 South Second Street sanctuary while renovations

and improvements are made at the Main Street facility, and a new home

is prepared for the current Bethany Pre-school. Services are held each

Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and the congregation invites visitors and prospective

members to join them for worship.
