Muncy locals Mar. 21, 2018

March 21, 2018
By BARBARA C. BARRETT , The Luminary

Icy weather once again closed some roads this month. Last Friday on March 16 PennDot reported that Rt. 15 was closed between Rt. 54 in Clinton Township and South Williamsport.

As we explore Women's History Month, much of the hisorical information on women's sports I found for the story on the Montgomery Raiders came from the National Women's History Museum as well as the players themselves. I became a charter member for the museum 20 years ago when it was launched in Washington D.C. The first major accomplishment for the women's museum was to bring the Portrait Monument of the women's Suffragist leaders, (Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Caty Stanton and Susan B. Anthony) from the basement in the Capitol building to the Rotunda where it can be seen. Projects like these depend on donations and the museum administrators use the funds to increase exposure on women's accomplishments to make this country great. For example, an exhibit was held in New York City on the role women played in World War I and II as spies. A website ( was launched for teachers and students to use where they can obtain information on enterprising women. But the main goal is get women's history into the school curriculums so girls can read about their role models the way boys can read about theirs. Women in sports is a perfect example and young girls today may have a hard time relating to the challenges the 1973 Red Raiders faced to form a winning team.

I was pleased to read about the exciting activities held at the Muncy Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. They had a Super Bowl contest with 65 participants, and they have craft time every month. Last month they decorated wooden snowmen for the windows. On Friday, they had a St. Patrick's Day Party for the residents.

My congratulations and gratitude goes to Carol Shetler for spending nearly 20 years writing for The Luminary. Her recent WWI stories are bringing in lots of discussions and talks among families, and the knowledge this war played among our ancestors is incredible. Just last week I learned that my maternal grandfather was a 'gunner' in the Navy during WWI and lied about his age to enlist.

Now is a good time to shop for seasonal clothing discounts, but I just don't understand the new attire. My grandparents were professional tailors and worked at a clothing store in downtown Williamsport. When I was a young child, not more than 7, they taught me how to fix holes, make patches and mend clothes. Why would I want to spend my hard earned money to buy clothes today with holes and rips in them! Looks like no more suits and hats at Easter time anymore.
