Hughesville Locals Mar.14, 2018

By Staff | Mar 14, 2018

Beware the Ides of March! So said the soothsayer to Julius Caesar about mid-March; I hope we have better fortune than he did! The recent series of Nor’easters has really been one for the record books, but I am afraid we will be seeing more aberrations from what we think of as “normal” weather patterns as our climate shifts. I was claiming some credit for the fact that the first two storms brought us very little trouble. Near the end of February, I bought a large bag of ice-melt granules and a new snow shovel. Neither one has been called into much service, so you’re welcome! However, I expect that they will prove useful before we are finally done with winter.

No matter what the weather may bring (and I heard that April may be just as unsettled as early March has been), Hughesville Area Public Library and the East Lycoming Historical Society museum offer you many ways to spend some enjoyable time either alone or with friends and family. Check their websites or posted schedules, or give them a call to see what fits your daily agenda. There is no end to the fun and learning available in these community gems.

Congratulations to Luke Gorg on his achievement as a competitor at the State Wrestling Championship tournament in Hershey last week! In addition, our Spartan Girls basketball team extended its season with their outstanding performance in the district, and in their state-level play-off game. Hooray, HHS Spartans!

I spoke to Officer Boyer, one of our Hughesville police officers who is also the School Resource officer, about my experience with the “Walk” signal at Main and Water Streets. He said that PennDOT has declined requests to halt all traffic to allow pedestrians to cross because setting the lights that way would be too disruptive to the flow of traffic, which is at the highest level at that intersection of the two state highways. Doesn’t it seem to make sense that where the traffic is heaviest there would be more need, not less, for pedestrians to have safe passage? Also, it worries me because the walk signals at Main Street and Cemetery St./Broadway are set so they stop traffic in all directions, so while one can rely on stopped traffic at one intersection, it is not the same at the only other currently existing traffic light in town. We can only wonder what the status will be for pedestrians at the soon-to-be-installed traffic signal at the north end of town. Officer Boyer said the local police hope all motorists will observe the laws about pedestrians in crosswalks and the fact that if the walk signal is lit, the pedestrian has the right of way. I know I will be much less likely to try to cross at that intersection whenever there is any traffic. Please join me in urging PennDOT to match the functions of the signals at both intersections to allow safe passage and avoid confusion and possible injuries.
