Hughesville Locals June 28, 2017

June 30, 2017
By NANCY HODGE , The Luminary

Summer Sunday afternoons are the best! I was fortunate to have the opportunity to just relax for a few hours with a good book this past weekend, and the weather could not have been more perfect. Neither too hot nor humid, 81 degrees and passing cumulus clouds, the calls of birds and occasional vehicle sounds from the street, all combined to make me grateful for our lovely little community. While there are often temptations to consider moving to some other place, for retirement or family considerations, I still feel anchored to this place. There is a calm satisfaction in feeling comfortable in one's own backyard.

Can you believe that June is nearly done? I seem to have only begun to do any, let alone all, of the many summer projects and fun things I dreamt about in February. However, I probably said the same thing last year, and still have the same hopeful lists of things to do, places to go, and people to see.

While there have been some closures of local businesses lately, some new places are opening and giving a positive outlook for Main Street. At Walnut Street there is the Silverthorn Tavern (whose name honors a local Revolutionary War time heroine), and I have seen some signs that promise openings of one of the currently shuttered convenience stores, plus a Vito's Pizza at the north end of town. Good luck to all who are improving our business community.

Next week is the Fourth of July holiday. Please have a safe and enjoyable holiday!
