The Muncy Luminary

Friday, May 5, 1877

140 years ago

Married-At the parsonage in East Muncy, by Rev. Jacob Miller, on Tuesday, April 24, Ellis P. Moon and Mary J. Harris, both of Fairfield township.

Died-In this borough on Saturday, the 28th ult., of disease of the heart, Susannah, wife of Jacob Ort, aged 66 years. In Muncy Creek township, on the 24th ult., of pneumonia, Mrs. Margaret Lilley, aged 57 years.

Nelson Bruner has moved from Reading to Muncy.

The Vigilants had their steamer out for practice Monday evening.

D.Clapp & Co. shipped 75,000 feet of lumber and over 500,000 shingles from their mill last week. The shipments of this firm this spring aggregate 2,000 cars.

P.N. Trumbower on Wednesday ran the first "heat" of castings since the firm of P.M. Trumbower & Co. was dissolved eighteen months ago.

Married-In Bridgeport, Pa., April 23, Hon. Chas D. Eldred, of this place, and Mrs. Elizabeth H. McQuaide of the former place.

Mrs. Sarah Snyder, wife of Philip Snyder, committed suicide last Friday by hanging herself in the woods near her home in Muncy Creek township, about three miles from Muncy.

Died: At Milton, April 26, Mrs. Anna M. Hester, formerly of this place.

Dr. James R. Rankin recently began the manufacture of "Mermadine" a toilet powder of rare excellence.

W.W. Pickering came down from Picture Rocks last week to take charge of the planning mill attached to S.E. Sprout's evaporator factory.

100 years ago

Died: Julia McCabe died at her home on West Pepper street Monday morning after a long illness, aged 72 years.

Miss Carrie Frey and Ralph Shaner, both of Pennsdale were married on April 26 in Pennsdale.

Miss Linda McCarty entertained a dinner at the Crawford house in honor of her sister, Mrs. Oliver Sanders, of Huntington, W.Va.

A portable saw mill, including contents and machinery, and also 75,000 feet of sawed lumber ready for shipment all the property of Valentine Smith, at Wallace Run, near the junction of Salt creek with that stream, were destroyed fire which raged for over 30 hours during Saturday and part of Sunday.

For sale: Team of black mules, weighting about 2300 pounds; good locking and full of life. Will sell cheap.

Stan Schuyler, who coached Muncy high school football teams for 15 years will return to the helm of the Muncy gridiron fortunes for the 1967 season.

Miss Cynthia Fought of Hughesville placed second in the 19t annual "National Ability Counts" essay contest, while Miss Jeannie Royston, of Muncy high school, was second and Miss Betty Jo Richlin, of MHS, tooth both third an d fourth awards in the poster division of the same contest.

The oldest existing house in the West Branch Valley, often referred to as the Brock, Hall, or Wallis house, at Muncy Farms, will be one of the homes in the Quaker Fieldstone House tour.

April 16 is the first of two Sabin Oral Sundays in 1967 designated for those not previously immunized against polio.

J. Kenneth Mincemoyer, Muncy native, and teacher in Hughesville high school for many years, has been appointed executive director of the Eagles Mere Association.
