Muncy Locals Feb. 17, 2016

By Staff | Feb 17, 2016

This is quilting time. Every other year the Susquehanna Valley Quilt Guild members put on a spectacular quilt show. They said they are at full capacity right now for space and have to hang some of the quilts from the ceiling at the Hughesville fire hall. Nevertheless, the admission price is well worth the show. Husbands have come to this event unexpectedly and have marveled at the artistry from the entries. Incidentally, this show is tacked on the same time as the annual gun show in Pennsdale.

I have seen some of these quilts in the making and the amount of time put into these textile creations is definitely “labor intensive” a term used by my husband as he watches me hand stitch a binding onto my entry. We hope you can come to the show. It is a three day event with food and prizes.

I also took some of those old tee shirts I have been collecting over the years and couldn’t part with, and cut them all up to make a memory quilt for the 2018 show. The class was held last week at Strobels Sewing Center in Williamsport. Carol Shetler also took the class and is going to make one as well. My cousin took some old sweaters of her dad’s and made a nice quilt for her mom, my aunt, after he passed away, so the ideas are endless for these memory quilts. You can also use any old photographs, maps, and favorite memorabilia paired with some nice novelty prints to make it unique and pass it on to younger family members,

And while on the subject of quilting, Dr. Karen Brown, a Palliative Care physician with Susquehanna Health donated a lovely quilt to the Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Muncy in honor of her father, Richard Thomas and all those who have served our country. She has been working with the Rehabilitation Center participating in the ‘We Honor Vets’ program. Dr. Brown said the quilt is a symbol to honor the service of all veterans. The quilt will be used by the funeral director to drape a veteran as they exit the facililty.

These quilts become heirlooms, a living legacy with meaningful inspirations and hours of timeless quality.

Happy quilting!
