HUGHESVILLE - Throughout the years Hughesville High school has been known for their great athletes. Many schools have one or two good athletes, but this year Hughesville High School has remarkable athletes in almost every sport. The Pennsylvania Heartland Association Conference, (P.H.A.C.) recently nominated several Hughesville athletes in football, boys soccer, girls soccer, girls tennis, and cross country.

After a grueling football season, the Spartans were thrilled to receive two nominations to the P.H.A.C. All Stars, Junior Nick Yeager was nominated as a 2nd Team all-star as a Running back. Sophomore Trey Smith was also a 2nd team all-star.

The boys soccer season was filled with stiff competition from highly competitive and experienced local teams. Senior Jim Secules was recognized for his skills with 2nd team all-star status as a midfielder.

The girls soccer team had a very impressive season and they also had four all-stars on their team. Michelle Mostowy was a 1st team midfielder in her senior season. Melanie Santo was a 2nd team all-star as a midfielder. Sophomore Emily Eck was a 2nd team all-star as a defender. And in her senior year, goalkeeper Allison Russell also was a second team all-star.

The Spartan's Girls tennis team also received some well deserved accolades. This season the Spartans took second in the District IV playoffs and lost in the first round of states. Junior Courtney McCowan was honored as a 1st team PHAC all-star. Doubles partners Olivia Gorg and Allison Matticci were also recognized as 1st team all-stars. Junior Kierra Croucher was a 2nd team all-star. And head coach April Brown was awarded Co-Coach of the year.

Bryce Gavitt qualified for the PIAA State Championships, as a junior in cross country. Bryce was the only one to qualify for the Spartan runners this year and he finished 112 out of 226. This was a season of growth for Bryce and he is hoping to have another in his senior season.
