Rotarians, Sherry Cowburn, Geneva Peck and Karlda Thomas distributed dictionaries to all third graders throughout the East Lycoming School District on Nov. 7.

HUGHESVILLE – On Wednesday November 7, members of the Hughesville Chapter of Rotary International brought dictionaries to the third graders throughout the East Lycoming School District. Rotarians Geneva Peck, Karlda Thomas, Jim Toohey and Sherry Cowburn visited classrooms and distributed new dictionaries to all of the current third grade students. One Rotarian noted, “This is an annual event at the Hughesville schools and the students always seem interested and enthusiastic.” “Look at all of the words,” beamed one of the students, as she scanned through her new book.

Mrs. Geneva Peck spent time with the students at each school explaining the value and contents of the book and also describing the Rotary’s work within the community. At Ashkar Elementary school one student, after hearing about the rotary pavilion in town, proudly stated, “My brother helped to build that. He is an L.C.C. carpenter.” (carpentry student at the Lycoming Career and Technology Center). Another student stated, “My Brother Jimmy is an Interacter,” referring to the rotary’s club for teens.

The Rotarians outlined the future events in Hughesville for the students including the annual tree lighting and a visit from Santa Claus. Mrs. Peck encouraged all of the students to get involved in their education and to use their new resource well. She also stressed that each of them could be Rotarians and leaders in their community when they grow up.
