A very successful program that is being utilized at the East Lycoming School is the “High School Big Buddies”. Elementary teachers throughout the district are given the opportunity to request a Hughesville High School student who is a member of the Boys and Girls Varsity Club from advisor Jill Warg.

In addition, these students also volunteer their time to work in the community and with the elderly. At their elementary classroom assignments, the students help tutor students, assist teachers, and serve as positive role models.

There are over 30 students in this program who commit to many hours throughout the school year. “The students and staff greatly look forward to their arrival each week, knowing that their student’s faces will light up when they walk through the door”, said Ferrell Elementary Third Grade teacher Carol Mordan.
