BC-BKN--Player Movement-Tax Impact-Glance

July 14, 2017
Associated Press

Here are some of the biggest contracts of this free-agency period along with the income tax rates for the states where those teams are located. We've also calculated the approximate state tax those players could end up paying based on the tax rates of the states where their teams are located, assuming they've made that state their residence. Keep in mind this number is a rough figure that doesn't take into account other factors, such as the "jock taxes" they'd pay on the road that could be credited against their tax liability in their home states.

___

G James Harden, Houston Rockets (six years, $228 million). Texas tax rate: No state income tax.

G Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors (five years, $201 million). California tax rate: 13.3 percent. Approximate state tax: $26.73 million.

F Blake Griffin, Los Angeles Clippers (five years, $175 million). California tax rate: 13.3 percent. Approximate state tax: $23.3 million.

G Gordon Hayward, Boston Celtics (four years, $128 million). Massachusetts tax rate: 5.1 percent. Approximate state tax: $6.4 million.

G Jrue Holiday, New Orleans Pelicans (five years, $126 million). Louisiana tax rate: 6 percent. Approximate state tax: $7.6 million.
