'Blaze A Trail'
May 11, 2016 - Barb Barrett
This is Older Americans Month and the Administration on Aging is taking time to honor the contributions of older adults in our society. The theme this year is to ‘Blaze a Trail’ and raise awareness on important issues we face as we get older. From wellness to civic engagement, securing finances or whatever we wish to take upon ourselves in our later years, the opportunities and resources are there. Even if you wish to ride or keep riding a motorcycle as May is declared by PennDot as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The first week in May was National Teacher Appreciation Week and to commemorate, Source4Teachers, Muncy School District’s outsource for filling in qualified substitutes, reported that they were proud to have covered 97 percent of the daily absences. This week is Nursing Home Week. And if you can, give a special thank you to a caretaker or nurse. May is also Healthy Vision Month, a good time to get those eyes checked. Approximately 143 million adults in America have eye conditions that can cause visual impairment or blindness, according to the National Eye Institute. Getting regular eye exams can help reduce risk of vision loss. They also recommend a nutritious diet of dark leafy greens, cold water fish and citrus fruits. The Journal Ophthalmology says that a diet rich in vitamin C can “cut the risk of cataract progression by nearly a third.” Now those of you who are lucky enough to fish, those stream trout ought to be perfect for a keen eye. Send some my way… Happy fishing!
