Don't get scammed this tax season!
February 3, 2016 - Barb Barrett
Now that February has begun there are a few important items to share this month. As many of you are getting ready to prepare your taxes, please be aware of scammers out there. The IRS has issued a new campaign to help you protect financial and personal data. Information with some consumer friendly tax tips can be found at IRS.gov and special attention is given to those who file online. There are videos to watch that tell you what measures to take. Financial exploitation has been called “the crime of the 21st century.” In a recent study from Consumer Reports, about 1 in 20 seniors said they were financially abused. It can happen so easily. Criminals will pose as government officials or other authority figures, and they predominantly prey on older adults. Sometimes they collect names from obituaries. If you do suspect fraud, be sure to alert banks and credit card companies as soon as possible. These are heartless crimes and we should not be afraid to report it.
