Our next door neighbors
April 1, 2015 - Barb Barrett
On March 15 I attended a local program through our church on the women who live at the Muncy State Prison. For on You-Tube for the whole world to see, they tell their stories. I couldn’t help ask myself why they did this; and after I viewed some of the videos and listened to what they they were saying, I realized they wanted their stories told. Through the Commonwealth Media Hub and PAcast they made 16 videos which can be accessed through TEDx Muncy State Prison.
To me their stories revealed much reflection, redemption, and motivation. I found their stories compelling and more than anything, I realized it could be me or any one of us. A lot of these women had good foundations, children and supporting families.
Each video is about ten minutes long. Their stories tell us not to make the same mistakes and motivate us to do better. John Wetzel, the Secretary of Corrections talks about the “House of Hope” that reveals inspirational stories of healing, and there is a song “This is not my home” referenced by the Lady Lifers. They talk about their life, experiences, addictions, sorrows, dreams and family. These women are our very own neighbors, and they really want their stories heard.
