Be Kind To Your Heart

February 3, 2015 - Barb Barrett
February is American Heart Health month and no doubt, many of you will notice posters and events centered on this theme. The Meck Senior Center will be having Zumba Gold classes every Wednesday afternoon this month. The schools will be having some after school events in the gym. Adding to Urie Kline’s new drumming classes, a new yoga studio will be opening this weekend in downtown Muncy. And the East Lycoming YMCA has a schedule of classes all day long during the week, something there for all ages. A new director is also starting this week at the Y, and new memberships are encouraged. There are some great programs for seniors and pre-schoolers.

The American Heart Association recommends exercise to target the heart rate. Only with doctor’s approval, many of us can benefit from the exercise. They report that a heart attack can strike someone every 34 seconds. This month is a good time to be more “vigilant in knowing about heart health.” 30 minutes of moderate exercise is great prevention, not to mention losing the extra body weight and reducing stress.

Be wary of shoveling this heavy, wet snow. Although snow shoveling can be kind to the heart, it can also be dangerous if you over-exert yourself. Sometimes a nice gentle walk is all we need on days like this. Or try flexing muscles as you lift the laundry basket or move furniture, anything to keep active. If not too cold, try parking at the end of the lot when grocery shopping, and walking the longer distance to the door. The smart phones have apps now that can track our walking miles and heart and pulse rates to see how we're doing. Although, I must admit, sometimes there are days when I just don't want to know, and a nice long winter's nap will do just fine.
