From Clutter to Decor

January 28, 2015 - Barb Barrett
This time of year with snow bound days, staying indoors presents a good opportunity to clean out drawers and files and closets. Trying to decide what to toss and what to keep often can be a daunting task. As you know, we become attached to things. My husband asks me why I don’t throw away those old lesson plans from the 70’s and 80’s when I was a full time teacher. Probably because most of them were hand made, and perhaps I feel a connection to them. From clutter to decor, I found a myriad of resources to aid in the rearrangement of things. Using suggestions from HGTV and some local store displays, I decided that now was a good time to “declassify” some items. Groupings of pottery and glass got put into other places; shelves were rearranged with new displays. The Christmas items were taken away and other items were given a new look just by placing them somewhere else. A fresh combination of several ceramic pitchers made a visual impact in the kitchen and a collection of mugs were moved to a different spot that was more eye-catching. Over the holidays, often shelves and table tops get cluttered with lots of stuff from gifts, books, magazines and pet toys. Getting organizers and containers such as baskets can really help banish the clutter and put different things in the spotlight. I brought a bench down from upstairs to use at the foot of the bed, and meanwhile took a small reading chair that I kept tripping over, and moved it to an upstairs bedroom where it fits the space much better. Sometimes all a room needs, is a little bit of rearranging.
