STAY WELL! STAY HEALTHY!

This seems to be a good month to embark on health and wellness. There are some good resources in our area to help us spiritually, physically and mentally. The STEP, Inc. Meck Senior Center in Muncy Township will be starting some classes on mindful meditation and some discussions on “wellness jeopardy” and “matters of the heart.” These classes will be held on Mondays starting Feb. 3 at 11:30 a.m. They will also be doing some water aerobics, easy exercises for couch potatoes, and blood pressure checks.

The East Lycoming YMCA has also started their new year fitness classes. The Small Striders will begin soon and they are currently taking registrations. It is an 8 week family running program, targeted to young students to build self-esteem and get into a daily routine of doing exercise for better health. They will meet every Monday and Wednesday starting at 4:30 the first week of February with mentors and trainers on site.

Urie Kline from Muncy has decided to open a drumming school which will start later this month on John Brady Drive. He will be introducing some skills that he experienced in his travels while living in Pittsburgh and Honolulu. Drum therapy is currently being used for those with brain injuries or impairment, physical injuries, arthritis, addictions and it supports numerous health benefits according to Urie.

Another concern during this time of year is to prevent fractures and falls. Icy conditions can make it difficult sometimes to get outdoors. Many things can cause a fall but do take precaution to keep from falling. Sometimes medications or poor reflexes can upset our balance. Staying physically active does help and regular exercise will strengthen our muscles. That is why I highly recommend the Silver Sneakers program at the YMCA. You can work at your level and Diana Logan, the instructor is excellent. You will need to call first or check their website as this time of year, classes are cancelled during inclement weather. They are usually held every morning from 10 to 11 except for Tuesdays. There are also spinning classes and simple stretching exercise classes. My personal favorite is the yoga. There is something to accommodate all of us, and we don’t have to go far. Stay well and stay healthy!
