National Volunteer Week

April 1, 2014 - Barb Barrett
Welcome April! I hope my yard thaws out this week. There are plenty of activities planned this month from cleanups to 5K runs, community open houses, spring flings, and lots of ways to get outdoors.

National Volunteer Week marks a special time this month and I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our dedicated community volunteers, hosts and supporters. Their continued dedication is exemplary for all community members and truly embodies the spirit of the 2014 National Volunteer Week, which is from April 6th to April 12th.

I have been sitting in meetings with business members and organizations in each community as they plan their annual events. And I noticed one thing they have in common. Each business organization, that is the MPBA, the GHBA, and RM (Revitalize Montgomery) is run by a woman who owns their own business. They volunteer their time to structure meetings, run schedules, organize committees, set up speakers and coordinate open houses - these are just a few things on their busy agendas.

Cindy Appleman is new Chair for MPBA and owner of ReMax Edge Real Estate on Main Street in Muncy. Suzanne Holmes from GHBA runs a music and design studio in Hughesville and can be seen volunteering in other organizations as well. Besides taking care of her mother, Becky Sanguedolce, owner of Riverside Campground, facilitates bi-monthly meetings for Revitalize Montgomery, and helps maintain the beauty of the borough park. All three women work on grant proposals, sit on committees, and for the most part, make things happen in their communities.

Another woman we want to recognize is Susanah Falck from Muncy who devotes her time to serving not only her community but others who live in foreign countries. She has hosted 11 foreign exchange students welcoming them into our community. So during this time, let's recognize those special people in our lives who serve others and volunteer their time to make things better.
