Monthly proclamations

October 1, 2013 - Barb Barrett
Friday October 4 is National Manufacturing Day. In fact there are quite a few proclamations this month including Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Watch for the many activities this month that support events from various organizations. It is Fall Festival time. I am looking forward to Heritage Days in Turbotville and the Octoberfest in Mifflinburg this month. The monthly outreach story times has started at the Muncy Public Library. Director Victoria Thompson Hess has been going out into the community and visiting preschools to inform them about the resources available to them through the library. She has visited First United Methodist Church's Preschool, St. John Neuman Pre-School at the Church of Resurrection and Muncy's Pitter Patter Day School. She takes her guitar and sings songs with the children and shares books with them. Interacting with "Miss Victoria" outside the library helps them understand that their library "isn't just a building with books," she told me. "It's also about familiar faces and fun activities." During the 4th Friday event and the annual chili cook-off, I was able to visit the library and see artwork of self-portraits on display from Karen Worth's art classes. You can check them out during the next two weeks in the community room. The month starts with a paranormal event at the library and ends with Halloween parades. On weekends locals can always enjoy Pennsdale's famous "scary barn" and hay ride. Kudos to the kindergarten classes at Myers for making a great tasting chili. I never knew there were so many kinds of beans.
