December 3, 2013 - Barb Barrett
Saturday was small business Saturday, and I must say, that I purchased some of my most unique gifts from some of the smaller shops in the area. They are secret gems in our community and many of them discount their items. I found some nice wooden ornaments and animated book marks at Donna's Gifts in Hughesville, a metal holiday sculpture to hang at Cheri's House of Flowers, a 15" tall glass vase with a lid and bayberry candles at Alechia's House of Country, some stockings at the ELHS, and some homemade sticky buns at the Muncy Bake Shop. I wish I would have had more time and money to shop, but I was glad not to have dealt with any hard nosed crowds, and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to the store owners. These businesses have put a lot of their savings and livelihood into being self-employed. It is a trade-off, but they told me they get to enjoy their efforts. Joanne Pauling who owns the bake shop in Muncy said she bought the building and lives upstairs, so she is practically always on call. And it is not uncommon to see the owners behind the counter serving the needs of their customers. Each community has something for everyone, from the sports enthusiast to the homemaker. So shop in your immediate downtown area this Christmas. It is like an investment in your community. You will be surprised what treasure you might find! Happy shopping!
